The Cross of Christ creates ONE True Community of Christ.
13 But now in Christ Jesus you who
formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For He Himself is our peace,
who made both groups into one, and broke down the barrier of the dividing
wall, 15 by abolishing in His
flesh the enmity, which is the Law of commandments contained in ordinances,
that in Himself He might make the two into one new man, thus establishing
peace, 16 and might reconcile
them both in one body to God through the cross, by it having put to death the
enmity.
Before Herod’s Temple in
Jerusalem was destroyed, there was a middle wall separating Gentiles from the
main temple. There was this notice written on the wall: "No foreigner may
enter within the barricade which surrounds the sanctuary and enclosure. Anyone
who is caught doing so will have himself to blame for his ensuing death." This wall may also remind us of other walls in
history like the Berlin wall that used to separate West Germany from East
Germany. We may also think of the invisible wall that divides North Korea from
South Korea.
Why
are there many hostilities among us? Let me suggest some of the walls of
hostilities that we sometimes build around us:
Religious Walls: Some times we think that my
denomination is the better than others.
Social Walls: sometimes we are not comfortable in
reaching out to people we consider lower than us: the poor, the prostitutes,
people of a different race or color…
Cultural Walls: we are afraid of going to places
beyond our comfort zone, to places that will stretch us to speak a language
other than our own….
But
praise be to God for the cross of Christ, those walls have been broken. All of
us, the Bible says, have been separated from God and without Jesus Christ we
are enemies of God; we have no peace with God and that is why we have no peace
with one another. The only way to have peace with one another is first of all
to have peace with God. If the world is to have peace then they must have a
personal relationship with the Prince of Peace, who is Jesus Christ. He is not
only the Prince of Peace but he is PEACE.
The
cross of Christ brings a radical change in our lives; it breaks walls that
divide us, whether they are religious wall, social walls or cultural walls. The
Cross of Christ creates ONE true community of Christ.
